Bolton Castle Ghost Hunt with Phil Whyman & Richard Felix

Bolton Castle is regarded by many as one of Lancashire's most haunted. It is a medieval fortress which has a long and colourful history dating back to the late 1300's, when it was constructed by the then Lord Chancellor Richard Le Scrope (it is still owned by his descendants!). The castle is of a quadrangular shape. In 1644 during the Civil War Bolton Castle was besieged by Parliamentary troops and parts of the castle were damaged during fighting, but most of it remains and can still be seen today. Among other notable episodes in the history of Bolton Castle is the fact that Mary, Queen of Scots was held prisoner here in Queen Elizabeth I's reign. She was later moved closer to London, eventually being beheaded. HAUNTINGS & ACTIVITY As with many castles in the UK, Bolton Castle has its fair share of reported ghosts and paranormal activity. Mary, Queen of Scots There are not many ghosts who have clocked up the impressive mileage that Mary, Queen of Scots would appear to have to her name - she must be one of the most widely reported spectres within the UK. Mary was imprisoned here - along with an impressive array of servants - during the reign of Elizabeth I, and many believe that she still visits from time to time. It is believed that the ghostly form of Mary haunts the courtyard at Bolton Castle and has been seen a number of times, as well as in several other areas of the castle itself. 'RUGBY SOUNDBITE' Andy's expert finger style technique and Martin's rapid flat picking could only be improved had they been playing the same tune. ‘ESSEX ABOUT TOWN’ The audience unanimously rose to their feet after the first number but the promoter assured everyone would get a full refund. ‘THE LONDON EAR’ Andy launched himself into the air mistaking the crèche for the mosh pit. Thankfully the parents agreed to settle out of court as no bones were broken, just the plastic tray on a kiddie’s high chair. ‘JAZZ AND WORLD WEEKLY’ Martin’s bizarre chords and discordant counter harmony was not the result of studying Stockhausen, he’d just forgotten to tune his guitar. Andy admitted that Stockhausen and Waterman were his favourite producers.

Haunted Theatre Morecambe Winter Gardens has seen many a face come and go throughout its history, and it appears that some of those associated with the building have not quite gone altogether. There are numerous reports of strange incidents happening at what is reputedly one of the most haunted buildings within Lancashire, including: Phantom Footsteps The sounds of phantom footsteps have been heard by staff and workers alike at the building, coming from areas where there is nobody present. Knocks and Bangs Unexplained bangs and knocks have been heard throughout the building, and upon inspection no cause could ever be found. Physical Contact There have been reports that workers, staff and visitors to the building have been touched and pushed by unseen spectral hands. The Haunted Staircase The spirit of a woman has been picked up on the main staircase. It is thought that during an argument with her partner she either fell or was pushed down the stairs where she died. Poltergeist Activity Poltergeist activity would appear to be rife at the Morecambe Winter Gardens theatre - is this perhaps the bad side of the ghosts, or merely a playful spirit? The singing ghost During a visit to the Winter Gardens by the 'Most Haunted' team the sound of a woman singing was heard, as well as that of what could only be described as a growling dog. The Little Proms brings Classical Music to a Wider audience, it's the First Sunday of every month and its always FREE! Ezra Williams attended the Purcell School of Music and then trained at the Royal College of Music where he participated in masterclasses with Sherill Milnes, Philip Langridge and Jose Carreras, and won the Herbert Howells Prize in 1998. He has sung with English Touring Opera and Holland Park Opera and performed extensively across Britain and Europe. After a long illness he has had to retrain and now has a slightly higher voice and a fuller tone. As a pianist Ezra has played at Buckingham Palace and The South Bank Centre and performed many recitals across the country. He is also a published author and lives in London. Ensemble Soleil perform on replicas of clarinets and basset horns used in late 18th and early 19th centuries. They capture the sound world that the great classical composers created and are able to play works in a historically informed style. Between them they have performed all over in Europe, including France, Belgium, Italy, Germany and Holland and work with ensembles such as the New London Consort, The Gabrieli Consort, Ensemble Philidor, Les Arts Florissants, COREAM and the Sweelinck Ensemble. Members of the ensemble trained at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. They have also trained with the Jeune Orchestre Atlantique in Saintes, France, as well as with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's Jerwood Scheme. With members of the ensemble also perfoming on modern clarinets and recorder their experience ranges from appearances with top London orchestras, operas, choral societies and chamber ensembles to musical theatre, and presenting education and outreach workshops and performance history lectures. THOMAS LORD BEER FESTIVAL SERVES UP A MENU OF LOCAL LIVE MUSIC Three days, fifteen bands, over twenty hours of live music, up to fifty Hampshire ales, 100% local food menu and a fourteen-piece steel band makes up the second annual Thomas Lord Beer Festival in West Meon on 18th, 19th, 20th July. Festival-goers will enjoy fantastic local beer, food and musical menu to suit all tastes. Bands, singers and schools from all over the county will be entertaining visitors at this free family Hampshire Food Festival event The Thomas Lord Beer Festival opens on Friday night with acoustic and English folk by Sarah Griffin and band, Marcos Dcruze and Four Marks Folk Band. Saturday opens with Hampshire Youth Orchestra String Quartet, followed by a carnival fiesta of Caribbean music with the Crestwood College 14-piece Steel Band from Eastleigh. Saturday night’s top billing includes local blues band, No Through Road and rock bands The Prime and Hardly Heroes performing original sets. Joining them will be self-named pub band, the Thomas Lord Old Gits who are made up of local farmers, villagers and customers. ‘The Old Gits’ made their debut at last year’s Thomas Lord Beer Festival and return to the stage by popular demand! Again, the band have asked for their fee to be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support and there will also be a charity collection on the night. The event closes on Sunday with an afternoon of jazz from Wyvern College Youth Jazz Band in Fair Oak, Grandpa Spells Jazz and Hot5+1. The stage will be set in the newly landscaped pub garden, which now features a Jamie Oliver-inspired wood-fired oven, outdoor bar, vegetable patch and a family of free-range chickens. The Thomas Lord now boasts one of the finest pub gardens in the county having undergone extensive renovation over the past two years. A 100% local food menu will be served throughout the weekend, with a selection of Perry, ciders and up to fifty local ales from Bowman Ales, Irvings, Goddards, Hampshire Brewery, Itchen Valley Brewery, Laverstoke Park, Triple FFF, Oakleaf Brewery and Suthwyk Ales. Camping for the event is available at Brockwood Farm, a ten minute stroll from the Thomas Lord. There will also be a shuttle-bus making regular pick up’s and drop offs at nearby villages and the campsite. Pitches are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. INVESTMENT POURS INTO LIQUID REFURB The launch of the new Liquid and Envy nightclub in Colchester is to receive another £1m investment. It was originally reported that the venue, which replaces the Hippodrome, would receive £1/2m but management have received confirmation of a complete £1.5m investment to completely transform the venue. Colchester’s historic Hippodrome will make way for a nationally recognised and award-winning, Liquid & Envy branded club due to open on Friday 25th July for the general public. The rolling-refurbishment, which allows customers to witness the progressive change, will reveal a three room venue – Liquid for over 18s and Envy for over 23s on Fridays and Saturdays. The former Grand Theatre and Grand Palace of Varieties venue will receive extensive work to maintain and return original features of the decor and mouldings to its original state as seen when it opened in 1905. Restoration experts and contractors will work meticulously to preserve and restore the building to its former glory to give a breathtaking contrast of contemporary and classic design. The intricate hand-carved Edwardian curved balconies compared to the stylish and modern high-quality finishes will provide a unique experience enhanced by multi-coloured lighting systems. The three-floor Liquid room will feature an impressive dance-floor and podium area brought together by a state-of-the-art sound system controlled from the raised DJ box. 5 VIP Pods and 4 further VIP booths will be a new and major addition to Liquid’s offering. IKON REBORN Ikon nightclub on Bridge Street is currently receiving a refurbishment to give the place a fresh new look in time for summer. The popular Bolton venue will stay open throughout the refurb to ensure customers can enjoy their favourite venue in the run up to the relaunch. Once complete, Ikon will hold a ‘huge’ celebration on Saturday 5th July to officially unveil the club’s changes, and the message from management is “It’s still Ikon but better”. One of the major changes will be the introduction of stylish VIP booths. Perfect for birthday and party celebrations, each booth is available for reservation and includes table service. General manager at Ikon, Derek Loadwick said: “We have a range of packages available to customers that want an extra special night to celebrate. Love2Love will completely replace the old New York New York club on Bridge Street with a new look, new feel and totally new vibe. The stylish and exciting late night venue will be catering for mainly the 18-25 market bringing top DJs and entertainment throughout the year. Already, management are talking to the agents behind big names such as Dave Pearce and Ian Van Dahl to name a few; “As part of the refurbishment, we are focusing on bringing in big names and today’s chart-topping entertainment,” says General Manager, Kieran McNab. I am helping to host a meet up night for London internet daters on Saturday 17th May starting at 7pm to Midnight. It is held at the fabulous Deep Restaurant bar which is private for this meet up night event.
